The best of times/The worst of times

In this exciting episode is a interesting story that details some great highs and low lows.

This was a few years ago when I was playing in NZ with the OZ1 crew. It was the last day of the event and we managed to get to a magnificent field in Christchurch. It is called The Arena. It contains a lot of buildings with some great cover. It was professionally run and well maintained. So, if you make it to NZ try this place out.

In the first game we were tasked with defending the downed pilot. The pilot was a large mannequin that was also quite heavy. I found a nice corner and alleyway to protect and locked down that area. hit a few people and was hit a few times as well when my flank fell. All in all, it was a very enjoyable game.

The next game is where the roller coaster started. We were tasked with retrieving the downed pilot. 15 minutes to get him back to our spawn. it was on. I knew the place I was in the last game was easily defensible and tried flanks there first. it didn’t work. I probed a few places, got hit a few times and hit a few people as well. Super fun.

The ref gave us the 5-minute warning and I could really feel the pressure now. I found myself in the centre of the field. I took a wrong turn and next thing I knew I was right next to the pilot. I was on one side of a barricade, pilot on the other. I made a choice and placed my marker against the wall, jumped the half wall and grabbed him. threw him on my back and ran. It was super heavy but luckily, I am a big boy. The ref saw me, and I could see his smile as I ran. I was so excited.

When I had made it back to our lines, I yelled to protect us and fall back. We had won this game. I was on top of the world. I had brought one home for the team. Like scoring the homerun or sinking a three pointer to win the game.

Well, that was it. I found a group of players in a discussion on someone on a team apparently not calling their hits. They looked at the rescued pilot and completely ignored it and went back to their conversation.

From the highest high to who cares. I was still happy, but it did put a bit of a downer

I f you can take one thing from this story it is to call your hits. Yes, it sucks having to walk back and restart but that is part of the game. if you think you have been hit: call it. I have even been caught off guard and didn’t feel a hit but congratulated the other player because they manoeuvred so well.
